BBC News iPad Coverage

Apr 07 2010

There’s been a lot written about the News iPad Application in the last few days. We’ve compiled a sample of what’s been written in the media and blogsphere.

bbc-ipadUSA Today – “If you were going to design the TV news broadcast of the future, where viewers pick the stories and watch them come to life, this is it.” (Full article here).

Gizmodo – “There’s something serene and reassuring about the BBC’s news coverage, whether it be video, print, or radio—all of which are here.” (Full article here)

Yahoo News – “Breaking news from the Beeb, complete with tappable photo galleries, full-screen streaming video, and — best of all — no pay wall. (Full article here)

Engadget – “it’s free, fast, and well-done” (Full article here)

PC World – “For the multilingual, you can browse in a handful of other languages, including Spanish, Russia, and Arabic. Want a more audio/visual approach? View the wide range of video, including one-minute news summaries. You can even personalize the app to focus on your areas of interest…” (Full article here)

Nieman Journalism Lab (Harvard University) – “Similarly, just about every news website created in the past 15 years has pushed users down a similar path: show them a whole bunch of headlines, arrayed into a variety of design styles, then expect the user to choose one of them […] The very attractive BBC app takes a key step away from that pattern. When you launch the app, you’re not confronted just with a bunch of headlines — you’re also thrown immediately into the text of the app’s top story, without so much as a click. And once you’re reading one story, the act of flicking to another one seems closer to a default act than when you’ve just selected from a menu of options.” (Full article here)

Paidcontent – “in the U.S., where the BBC operates commercially, its new iPad app is already a big hit […] the personalisable BBC News app offers text news in English and other languages, social sharing, story videos, 60-second video bulletins, full-screen video, live radio, breaking news alerts and offline syncing.” (Full article here)

Pocket-lint – “If that wasn’t enough to get the American’s giddy with excitement at getting their hands on news that Brits have paid for, they’ll also get 1-minute video news summaries to keep them informed and download content for offline browsing.” (Full article here)

San Diego Source – “BBC News (free) offers worldwide news and video clips as well as live BBC radio broadcasts. This is one of the most comprehensive news sites.” (Full article here)

Examiner.com – “follow the latest breaking news from BBC News. with photos and streaming videos.” (Full article here)
